Heritage Barn Conversion Into Modern Family Home – Stoney Ridge Farm
A complex multi-roof project that demanded a picture-perfect finish
Tek Clad recently undertook a transformative roofing and cladding project, turning Stoney Ridge Farm’s derelict barns into a stylish and energy-efficient family home. Situated in the beautiful Somerset countryside, the project presented a series of complex challenges that required meticulous attention to detail, precision, and expert craftsmanship - including a barrel roof, dual-pitch slopes, and out-of-square existing structures.
The Client
Mike Dunlop, a professional housebuilder, undertook this major project to create his ideal family home. With extensive experience in construction and a clear vision in mind, Mike rightly had high expectations for the standard of workmanship and finish.
The Project
This project involved the conversion of several agricultural barns into a residential property, comprising a 200 m² main dwelling and approximately 400 m² of garages and outbuildings.
As a residential conversion, the work required a high level of precision and finishing. The goal was to achieve a consistent, high-end appearance that matched the client’s vision.
A second key aspect of the project was the need to preserve the barns’ agricultural character while meeting modern residential standards.
The Challenges
The main challenge was the irregular and non-uniform structure of the existing barns. Years of settling and warping had left walls up to 100 mm out of square – far beyond typical tolerances in modern construction. This made standard surveying and building practices difficult to apply. The original roof structures featured a barrel roof, dual-pitch slopes, and intersecting and irregular rooflines, adding layers of complexity.
Sustainability was a core consideration. This being a residential dwelling, detailing was also key – demanding an extremely high level of precision, particularly for the highly visible flashings and fixings.
The Solutions
To tackle the irregular structure of the barns, Tek Clad took a hands-on, detail-focused approach. Instead of relying on standard measurements, the team manually marked up every fixing point on-site and established their own lines and datum points to guide the install.
For the roofing system, they used a twin-skin setup with loose-fill glass fibre insulation from Minster Insulation, achieving a U-value of 0.16 W/m²·K – ensuring the home is comfortable year-round and compliant with modern energy efficiency standards.
The outer layer consisted of Ash & Lacy 13.5 corrugated profile sheets, chosen for their traditional agricultural look and solid weather resistance. Low-profile fixings were used throughout, not only for performance but also to keep the visual finish clean.
Colour and material choices were coordinated across the main house, garages, and outbuildings, helping everything pair together visually while maintaining the rural character. The finished result is a well-insulated, robust structure that remains true to the original barns – with the added benefit of being ready for future energy upgrades such as solar panels.
The Results
Mike Dunlop, owner and developer of Stoney Ridge Farm, said:
“Tek Clad did a fantastic job on the Stoney Ridge Farm conversion. From the first meeting, they understood exactly what we were trying to achieve – keeping the traditional look of the barns while making sure everything met modern standards.
“The job wasn’t easy, especially with the old buildings being so out of shape, but the team showed real care and skill in getting the details right. The finish on the roofing and cladding is excellent and really makes the property stand out while still fitting into the landscape.
“The whole team was easy to deal with, organised, and stuck to the schedule, which made a real difference. I’m extremely pleased with the end result and would definitely work with Tek Clad again in the future.”
